Ethyl Acrylate Tank Cleaning
Ethyl Acrylate Tank

This time it concerned a project on a Lubrizol site where a storage tank of Ethyl Acrylate had to be cleaned.  The storage tank had a total volume of 250 cubic meters with a diameter of 6 meters and still contained residue of 1,000 litres of concentrated product.

Ethyl acrylate, an irritant and flammable substance which is used for the production of polymers, resins, plastics and rubber has a very low flash point and a very pungent acidic smell.   The cleaning task required a specialised customised approach.

WVT contacted Peeters Cleaning who would assist in cleaning the tank. One of the Peeters gas-washing trucks was utilised to perform the proposed cleaning technique. Initially, a quantity of 7,500 litres of Acrylex 55 was added to the storage tank. Acrylex 55 is an active, odour encapsulator that is specifically designed to neutralize acrylic odours.

The Ethyl Acrylate and the Acrylex 55 were then circulated through the gas washer and the tank by means of a heavy-duty pump for a duration of 12 hours. In the gas washer, an extra dose of Acrylex 55 was sprayed on the Ethyl Acrylate in order to obtain maximum neutralisation of the odour.

With the first results looking very promising a second rinse was started again for 12 hours also using 7,500 litres Acrylex 55. The residual
product was then safely pumped out and disposed.
