Pickling & Passivation, start-up of a pickling bath

This procedure describes the start-up of a pickling bath for stainless steel parts.  For this set-up an initial order was placed of 2000 Ltrs. Pickling Batch Concentrate.

Start-up of the bath


a bath was used with a content of 4000 Ltrs.  The bath was filled as follows :

  • 2000 Ltrs tap water
  • 2000 Ltrs Pickling Bath Concentrate

Temperature of the bath :

  • After filling the bath : Temp of 23°C
  • After 1hour : Temp of 20°C
  • After 12hrs : Temp of 17°C
  • After 36hrs : Temp of 13°C

Pickling Time of Stainless Steel 304 & 316 is between 60 and 90 minutes at room temperature of around 20°C.

Per 10°C less the pickling time will double up
Per 10°C more the pickling time will be half

For this reason it is important to monitor the temperature of the bath on a regular base.

Next to the improvised Pickling bath also a small rinsing bath was used unt lthe installation of the special ordered rinsing bath.  This rinsing bath is to have a first simple rinsing once the parts come out of the pickling bath.

At start the rinsing bath, filled with normal tap water, has a neutral pH (7) as normal tap water is used.

The parts contain residue of the Pickling product and the pH will decrease.

Once a pH of 3,5 to 3 is reached, it is recommended to renew the rinsing bath with fresh tap water

Submerging the parts


The parts need to be completely clean before they can go in the bath.  The parts are immersed in the bath and it is important to make sure that the pieces don’t touch the bottom of the bath or each other.

The parts have to be in the bath min. 60 to 90 minutes at a temperature of around 20°C.

The parts already have a very nice surface after rinsing in the bath.
However on the weld we can clearly see the black remaining.

This is iron which came to the surface after pickling, which adheres aggressively to the weld surface.

Rinsing with high pressure


After the rinsing in the bath it is very important to rinse thoroughly with high pressure (min. 150 bar).

There are 2 reasons:

  • To rinse/neutralize the acidity completely of the pickling bath
  • To remove all remaining iron from the surface

WVT: formulator of ash reduction solutions for waste oil streams

In the effort to minimise pollution of the oceans and waterways every ship must collect residues and oily mixtures generated during its ocean travels and discharge them to so-called port reception facilities, as indicated in the Marpol 73/78 protocol. These PRC facilities will recycle and regenerate the waste oil into second hand combustion fuels.

During this recycling process, the focus is on reducing the water and ash content in the waste oil. This is important because if the limitations for ash and organic chloride concentration are exceeded, the oil is less attractive for use as a fuel. WVT Industries responds with solutions that reduce effectively both ash content and organic chloride concentration.

Re-use of waste oil and lubricants

As crude oil and clean lubricants are becoming less available, efforts are being made to re-use waste oil and used lubricants as a second generation fuel.

During application, and especially after cleaning actions, oil and lubricants become polluted with water, heavy metals and halogens. If they remain untreated, these polluted flows will not only have a detrimental impact on the lifetime of the burner, but will also result in pollutants in the flue gases of the burner.

This is where WVT steps in. Instead of disposing of these flows as hazardous waste, they are treated to reduce both water and ash content, and allow re-use as a combustion fuel.

As the regulations regarding air-quality during industrial fuel oil burning are becoming more stringent, the need for low ash, high quality fuel oils becomes ever greater. This creates economic opportunities for the marketing of recycled oil.

Practical testing

As the composition of different flows of waste oil may vary, it is paramount to test for the most effective treatment that results in the lowest residual concentration for water, ash and halogens.

This is why WVT Industries has not only developed a range of treatment products, but also invested in laboratory solutions in order to be able to vary in both the use of products as in treatment conditions.

Examples of test results


In the first example a waste oil from the marine sector has been tested. Analysis made on the sample indicated increased concentrations of ash and more in detail potassium, calcium, aluminium and silica.

The test results can be seen as follows:

The test results indicate that a pure demulsifier (treatment 1) is insufficient for the reduction of the ashes, but a combination of an ash reduction aid and a demulsifier has resulted in waste concentrations low enough to comply with the limitations for both the total ash, as well as for the different metal components separately.


In this sample the total chloride concentration exceeded by far the maximum allowed limitation. Presence of chlorides in the waste oil in the burner will be converted into hydrochloric acid, with a strong corrosive impact on the installation.

In the above graph it can be seen that the first treatment has an impact on the inorganic chloride, but almost no effect on the organic chloride concentration. A different product (treatment 2) not only has a good effect on the organic chloride concentration, but the effects on the inorganic chlorides are even better than treatment 1, resulting in a very good total chloride removal.

How to apply Corrosion Guard?

The application of Corrosion Guard is fast and efficient. The process involves only 2 simple steps:

Surface Preparation 

Preparation is the key. Firstly remove all loose rust and flaking paint from the surface. Make sure that large rust deposits are removed and get rid of loose dirt particles. Afterwards, use WVT’s Degreaser S100 to wipe off oily deposits. The final, most  important step in the preparation process is to ensure that all surfaces are dry.


Secondly apply Corrosion Guard to the clean and dry surface. This can be done by simply brushing the product on at 1 to 1.5 millimeters thickness. Once applied, allow it to toughen (harden) for at least 24 hours at atmospheric temperature.

You can determine the quantity of pails you need by using the formula below:

(Pipe Dia (mm) x 3.14 x Pipe Run (m) x 11) / 18.000

Een reinigingsopdracht die zo’n 2,5 jaar geleden met succes werd uitgevoerd door onze partner CR Asia Singapore (CRAS) kent vandaag een mooi vervolg. Onze inzet, de kwaliteit van onze producten en de befaamde mond-tot-mondreclame hebben er immers voor gezorgd dat we een mooi contract met BP Australië hebben getekend.

Even ter herinnering: In augustus 2011 voerde CRAS een chemische reiniging uit van een ‘Packinox’ Combined Feed / Effluent warmtewisselaar bij een raffinaderij aan de Baai van Manilla op de Filippijnen. Deze bijzondere Packinox maakt deel uit van de Continuous Catalytic Reformer Unit (CCR) en de eerste die ooit werd gereinigd onder de verantwoordelijkheid van CR-Azië. De Packinox is een zeer kwetsbaar apparaat dat bestaat uit een gelaste plaatbundel in een cilindrisch drukvat. Bij overdruk in de plaatbundel ontstaat zeer zware schade. De fabrikant van deze warmtewisselaars, Alva-Laval, was dan ook heel bezorgd en betrokken bij de keuze van de reinigingsmethodiek en het type van de gebruikte chemicaliën.
